Why is my meter address different to my postal address?

Most of the time meter addresses and postal addresses are the same, however, this is not always the case. Your meter address may be different to your postal address for one of three reasons:

  • the meter address is different to the postal address,
  • the meter address is the same as your postal address but has been recorded differently, or
  • the wrong meter has been identified.

First, your meter and post box are not necessarily the same. For example, if you live on a street corner your post box may be on one street and your meter may be on the other.

Second, your meter address may be the same as your postal address but has been recorded slightly differently in the national database of electrical meters. This is probably the case if your meter address is only slightly different to your postal address. It is also unimportant in the scheme of things. The 'true address' of an electrical meter is its NMI (National Meter Identifier) so if the NMI is correct the meter address is largely irrelevant.

Practically speaking, the only time an incorrectly recorded address is a problem is if it could confuse people and lead neighbours to accidentally claim possession of your electrical meter when setting up their own electricity supply. If you know this to be a possibility ask Energy Locals customer service (1300 693 637) to have the address updated. Otherwise, you can probably leave it as is.

Finally, the wrong meter may have been identified. This is possibly the case if your meter address is distinctly different from your postal address. If this is the case please make it known to Energy Locals customer service, ideally by supplying the correct NMI to validate the meter.
