What is a GSL (Guaranteed Service Level) payment?

A GSL payment is a monetary payment made to an electricity network customer by their local network company, in compensation for unsatisfactory performance.

State governments mandate certain minimum levels of performance from electricity network operators, and that they compensate their customers for failing to meet those standards.

As a general rule GSL payments are made when you have been affected by multiple extended and unplanned electricity outages, and the amount paid rises in value depending on how poor your service experience has been.

That said GSL schemes differ across regions, and payments might be made for a variety of reasons including but not limited to:

  • a failure to arrive on time to an appointment,
  • a failure to supply electricity,
  • a failure to promptly restore supply, and
  • low reliability of supply.
  •

As an electricity customer, you do not need to register for GSL payments nor prompt them when you experience poor service. The GSL amount will be automatically credited to your electricity retailer and then subsequently reflected on your electricity account.
