How and when are basic meters transferred?

Basic meters transfer within a couple of days using estimated reads. Both retailers are advised of the estimated reading, which allows one to send a final bill and the other to commence billing with no overlap.

Bills used to require an actual read before a transfer, but this could take up to 90 days (and sometimes more if the next read was somehow missed). If you want to transfer on an actual read ask your current retailer to schedule a special meter and transfer shortly after that.
