Can I take my home battery with me if I move house?

The answer to this question depends on how you procured it. If you own the system outright and purchased it with no financial assistance the answer will be 'yes.' If not, you will have to review your terms and conditions.

Truthfully, there is not much point worrying about this issue. Well maintained home energy systems add value to a home so you can capitalise the cost and recover it through the sale of the property.

Otherwise, the two most popular schemes that we know of are as follows.

SA Government Home Battery Scheme

If you purchase a battery via the SA Government's Home Battery Scheme you will not be able to move the battery except in certain circumstances, as a condition of receiving the subsidy payment is that you will not.

iO Energy Battery Subscription

If you procure a battery through iO Energy's solar and battery subscription offer, you have three options on the sale of your property:

  1. You can transfer ('novate') your contract to the new owner, by mutual agreement with them.
  2. You can purchase the energy system at a depreciated price, and sell it with the property.
  3. You can request the removal of the energy system at a small cost.

The exact details of these options are all determined upfront in the contract that we mutually agree to before system installation.
